The EU’s (and Norwegian authorities’) goal is to recycle 55% of all plastic material by 2025. A new mindset and new technology are needed in order to achieve these goals.
Plastic production now exceeds 300 million tonnes per year, and will likely reach 1,100 million tonnes per year by 2050 in a business-as-usual scenario, according to McKinsey data. Today, most plastic waste ends up in landfills or is incinerated. Only 16 % of plastic is recycled, while 19 % of plastic is lost through unmanaged dumps and leaks – often ending up in the world’s oceans. If nothing is done, McKinsey estimates there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.
The most important aspect of environmental protection is to prevent pollution from happening, as well as efficient recycling and re-use of materials.
By turning plastic waste into useful products and a source of revenue, Halden Plastic Recycling wants to assume an important role in the fight against plastic pollution in our environment and oceans.
